Dressing the “True You”

A while back, I shared about attending the Vermont Women in Higher Education (VWHE) Women’s Leadership Conference. I also had the pleasure of attending the Pre-Conference, and while the entire experience sort of spoke to me, it was Stasia Savasuk, the founder of Thrift Me Pretty, whose story moved me most.

Stasia spoke about the importance and power of dressing the “true you”.  She opened by sharing about her humble past, the joys of thrift shopping (one of her favorite brands is J. Crew, but why pay retail when you can score great deals instead?), and stories from her current experience as a personal stylist.  During her presentation, Stasia had us think back to our most favorite outfit as a child, and asked us to remember all of its special details…the texture, color, pattern, fabric, and most importantly, she asked us to remember how it made us FEEL. She then talked about ways to translate those features and feelings into our own personal style today. We learned that if we wear clothing that is true reflection of our soul, then we will feel better, act better and do better.

Now, at this point I’m sold! (Stasia, if you ever decided to write a book, save me a signed copy!) Then she played us this clip and it really brought her point home.

This video was supposed to be for a B-School scholarship, but because it was too long, it didn’t qualify. However, you’ll be happy to know that Stasia was able to raise enough money for the 8 week on-line marketing program through GoFundMe, and is rockin’ her way through B-School now! And as for Raisa, I heard she just landed a gig as an Instagram photogher…You can check out her work on Instagram!

Stasia’s favorite thrift shop in Vermont? Shalom Schuk in Burlington. “…It’s fantastic. Prices are great, and they’ve got some real quality goods…”

She also recommends the Goodwill in South Burlington.

While this was not a sponsored post, I do want to mention that I was so busy being inspired and taking notes, that I wasn’t able to get any photos during Stasia’s presentation. The feature image is from the VWHE Facebook page.

Fitting Room Sesh: Target

Although I truly enjoy living in Vermont, I have to admit that I miss having a Target in state. I mean Walmart is great, but it’s no Target.

All these Target collabs kill me, because if I can’t get it online, then I usually can’t get it. However, while I was visiting my parents, I figured I’d try my luck to see if anything from the Peter Pilotto for Target collection was left or made it’s way to clearance…

I was also happy to see that Merona and Mossimo have really stepped up their game!

I ended up not getting anything shown above (and I really wanted those tux inspired pants), but I would have gotten it all, if it had all been my size and I didn’t have bills to pay.

I did end up getting a couple of things…

Redbook’s Real Women Style Awards

On my style page, I mentioned that I had submitted outfits to the Redbook’s Real Women Style Awards. I am SO excited to share that I was selected as one of the 25 semifinalists for America’s best-dressed women…I even made it onto a Redbook promo!

Voting goes until May 12th and the 10 finalists will get coverage in Redbook Magazine’s September issue!

A Week Plus: Leather Skirt

Leather makes me feel like such a badass! I love wearing my moto jacket or (in this case) my faux leather panel skirt. They both add a little edge to my look.

What do you wear when you want to feel a little rebellious?

A Week Plus: Yellow Skirt

Going through my clothes and trying to purge is an emotional roller coaster! Things I haven’t worn in years, become my favorites and things that really just need to be tossed, all of a sudden have indescribable sentimental value.

This yellow skirt was not one of those things. It was in my donate pile and I was ready to part ways with it. That is until I saw this outfit from Chandra of More Modern Modesty come across my Instagram feed. It is so creative and super chic, so I dug through the pile and yanked this right out!

Newly inspired, I came up with a week’s worth more of outfits for it, and yeah, I’m keeping it.

Has anyone ever inspired you to try a new way to style something  you never wear? Would love to hear your story!

“Support a cause, Support your legs”

I have an obsession with cute socks, and when I got the opportunity to share about SoxxyAir, I knew I couldn’t pass it up!

A Week Plus: Bold Dress

Not sure if it was obvious or not, but I’ve been trying to do somewhat of a fashion Friday by consistently posting outfits ideas via A Week Plus. That being said, I know I’m a little late, but it’s still Friday somewhere!

This dress was a personal challenge for me, I could only think to wear it with blue shoes. I have two pairs of blue shoes, but I still wanted to try to think more outside the box.

When I really focused on it, I came up with a ton of different ways to wear it and felt silly for limiting myself in the first place.

How would you have styled a dress like this?

The Poshmark App

If you’re anything like me, then you have a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear.

I have a small closet, so I have a massive overflow and I don’t even wear all of it!

I came across an article this summer in a magazine (I can’t for the life of me remember which one, but if I do I’ll make sure to update!) about closet clutter and how to reduce it, one suggestion was the app Poshmark. I signed up and found that not only could I make money while getting rid of clothes that I wasn’t wearing, but I could also buy things second hand, in great condition, and at a fraction of the retail cost! I didn’t know what to do with myself…so many great features! While there are some minor draw backs as with anything (think eBay) it really is a great community to be apart of and is so worth checking out!

So far I’ve made over $500 and I haven’t even been signed up for a year!

If you do sign up* or already have a Poshmark closet, follow my closet and let me know so I can follow yours.
