Happy Sephora Sale!

We love a sale! Especially a Sephora sale. And in case you weren’t already aware, the Sephora Savings Event is happening right now. If you need to replenish anything in your makeup bag or you’ve had your eye on something pricey (like the Dyson Airwrap), trust me you’re going to want to shop this sale before it ends April 15th.

Not sure what to shop? Let me help you!

Here are 5 of my top picks to shop from the Sephora Savings Event along with my reasons as to why.

  1. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
    • Even though it is an over $50 foundation, it is by far the best quality one that I’ve tried so far. Not only was my shade match flawless, which may sound trivial but is huge for darker skin tones, especial when it comes to non-Black owned beauty brands. I also get the most compliments on my complexion when I use this foundation specifically. But yeah, I waited for this sale to restock this, doing to most to get every last drop out of my previous one.
  2. NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer
    • I’ve been know to swap out makeup products often, over having a set of tried and true favorites. However, this is the one and only concealer I have ever (and probably will ever) made sure to always have in my makeup bag. And when I don’t use it I feel like my whole face beat is just off. I also have the liquid version, but it just isn’t the same in my opinion.
  3. Grande Cosmetics Brow Styling Gel
    • Anastasia Beverly Hills brow freeze styling wax was my longstanding favorite. I’ve also tried their newer brow freeze gel, which I don’t hate. Now, while I still like and use them both of them, the Grande Cosmetics one gives is just so much for forgiving. Whereas with the Anastasia product, I feel like I have about .5 seconds to do my brows, or forget it.
  4. Benefit Cosmetics Precisely, My Brow Detailer
    • Speaking of brows, this new brow pencil is it! It gives the precision of a liquid pen (think liquid eyeliner), but the look and feel of a pencil. I’ve been absolutely loving it, and haven’t shut up about it on Instagram.
  5. Benefit Cosmetics Hoola Bronzer
    • This is another Benefit favorite. I love a product that can do the job of more. I use this to contour my face and as an eyeshadow. Another product that you’re likely to always find in my makeup bag.

If you are shopping the Sephora sale, what’s in your cart? Here are more of my top picks, including what I’ve been loving lately and some new products that I’m trying out!

My August 2016 Play! by Sephora

My August 2016 Play! by Sephora

I’m going to be extremely blunt about my August 2016 Play! by Sephora box. If this month’s Play! by Sephora had been my first, I would have canceled.

I have heard so many complaints about Birchbox and people saying they’ve been disappointed with their box. While I can’t say that I have never been underwhelmed with a monthly box, overall my experience has been really good.

I never even dreamed I’d consider switching it out for another box until Sephora’s.

And I definitely didn’t understand why anyone would complain about their subscription box samples, until getting my August 2016 Play! by Sephora box.

Not that I’m complaining exactly.

Will I use the samples? Yes. But I’ve had better. Like, much better.

The value of the samples is probably well worth it, I just wasn’t nearly as impressed as I was with my first two boxes.

I haven’t tried the Lancôme or Alegenist samples yet, but I’ll get to them, love them, and then never buy them.

I maybe had one CLEAN sample that I liked before (once upon a time, in a Birchbox), but I find most of their scents too strong. This one would make a nice home scent (if it wasn’t so strong), but I doubt I’ll use it.

As always, the makeup samples are amazing. However, I already have four or five tubes in varying sizes of the Perversion Mascara.

The Sephora Contour Eye Pencil sounds interesting, but also like a scam. Either way, I like the color. I know because I have a very similar shade liner by another brand.

You never realize how much eyeshadow you have and don’t use until you hit pan in one you use a lot. I really need to stop buying expensive palettes and only get the pots of the colors I use. Anyways, most powders can be used as whatever you want (I’ve used eyeshadow to contour before), but I do like that this MAKE UP FOR EVER one doubles as a blush. My makeup bag just got a little lighter.

My July 2016 Play! by Sephora Box

July 2016 Sephora Play

This may only be my second ever Play! by Sephora box, but I am SUPER impressed! I liked my first box a lot, but I really really love the July 2016 Play! by Sephora box, you guys.

I honestly thought I would just be testing it out for a couple of boxes or so. I don’t think I have ever been SO wrong!

Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Foundation Primer Pore Minimizing | $39
NEST Citrine | $68
Ouai Wave Spray | $26
Too Faced Soleil Matte Chocolate Bronzer | $30
beautyblender blotterazzi by beautyblender | $20
First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser With Red Clay | $24

I am so close to running out of my current favorite primer (which is the Smashbox Photo Finish Oil Free Foundation Primer Hydrating) that it hurts a little. It’s almost to the point where I need to cut the top off. I need to buy more, but now I’m thinking that maybe next time I’ll have to get the pore minimizing one. I was once told that I didn’t have big pores. But, in the summer, my face begs to differ.

After getting a NEST candle that was more on the strong side than I care for, I was hesitant to spray this perfume. I, however, took one for the team, and it’s still strong, but in a nice way. That being said, if you like lighter, less musky smells, I wouldn’t recommend.

Ouai is a brand that I’m only starting to see around, and I really want to try their hair oil. Settling for the wave spray, isn’t so bad. I have no idea if I’m using it right, or rather, what the outcome on my hair texture is supposed to be, but I LOVE the way it smells, so frankly, I don’t even care!

Bronzer is one of the reasons I have trust issues. More specifically, Too Faced’s bronzers. I have it and never use it as a bronzer, because it’s too light. Then, they finally come out with a “dark chocolate” shade. Prayers answered, right? Nope. It looks darker online, but in person it’s basically the same. The shade I got as a sample wasn’t even the dark chocolate one…

Spending $20 on a makeup sponge sounded absurd to me. My $5 e.l.f. Cosmetics one works just fine. The idea of a sponge for blotting was even more preposterous.  But I now see the error of my ways. Mostly because blotting paper feels kind of wasteful. I’m also glad the blotterazzi came with a liquid cleanser sample, although almost everyone I know who is into makeup (including myself) uses Dr. Bronner’s.

I’ve been using a different face mask each week, but next week I’m going to take a break to give the First Aid Beauty cleanser a try. I haven’t used anything with red clay in it yet. Should be interesting!

My June 2016 Play! By Sephora Box

Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links.

June 2016 Play! by Sephora

Even though I am still crazy about Birchbox, I thought it was time to give another beauty subscription box a try. Due to my love affair with Sephora, Play! by Sephora seemed like the only valid option. Plus, I had just got the email to claim my spot after being waitlisted.

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara | $24
Tocca Florence | $68
BECCA Backlight Priming Filter | $38
bareMinerals bareSkin Sheer Sun Serum Bronzer | $28
Bumble and bumble Don’t Blow It | $31
tarte Tarteguard 30 Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 | $32

I’ve used They’re Real! mascara well over a dozen times. It may be the unpopular opinion, but it’s not my favorite. But, I also don’t hate it. I like it for when I’m just going to run out real quick for a bit. Buying a full size version isn’t in my plans, but the sample size is just the right amount.

Tocca makes some of the best fragrances. I would wear this for an anniversary or a summer wedding, but it’s a little heavier than what I’m used to.

After sharing my top three highlighters, I admitted that there were still some brands that I wanted to try. One such brand being BECCA. While this is a primer and not an illuminator per se, I am still pumped (pun very much so intended, because the sample is in a container that you pump) to try something by them. And a little dab after apply your foundation, helps creates a dewey look.

Very similarly, I’m happy to try another bronzer. I haven’t shared about my favorite bronzers yet, because finding bronzers that compliment darker skin tones isn’t as easy as one would think. I really like how this bareMineral serum bronzer blends in.

Perfect for the days when I don’t want to heat style my hair, which has been a lot lately. I haven’t tried using Don’t Blow It after washing my hair yet, but as a general hair styling product it’s not bad!

Never have I ever wanted to try a sunscreen as badly as Tarteguard. Aside from the social posts promoting it, I couldn’t even tell you why.

I don’t think Sephora’s is that much better than Birchbox’s, but it did have six samples instead of five and two products that I don’t think I’d ever have found waiting for me inside my Birchbox.

There’s no need to write off Birchbox just yet, but I’m not sure that if I had to pick one, that I could wholeheartedly say that I wouldn’t go with Sephora.

Have you tried both boxes? Which would you choose?

Formula X Challenge

Like many other beauty obsessed bloggers, I have a crap ton of nail polish.

But that doesn’t stop me from buying more.

So, when I have complimentary nail polish sent to me for being Sephora VIB Rouge, I get really excited and it pretty much makes my day. Yay, perks!

Formula X System

Super pumped to try the Formula X Challenge, I couldn’t wait to give myself a mani.

They had me falling in love (especially with the nail cleanser, which essentially preps your nails to be painted and helps the polish adhere and last longer), until the final step…

IMG_3415

The top coat was extremely thick, sticky and not easy to apply at all. While not totally awful, I was not a fan.

I’d had such high hopes…

Formula X in Fahrenheit

I’m not ready to write Formula X off just yet, so I do plan to go to Sephora and give the top coat another chance, (I’m hoping that I just got a bad bottle) and until then still use the rest of the system.

Have you tried the Formula X System? Thoughts?

National Lipstick Day

Since today is National Lipstick Day, I wanted to share one of my favorite lip products + a dupe that I discovered recently.

Dior Lip Glow

Dior is luxury. And while I try not to spend too much money on beauty products if I can help it, I am a Dior Addict.

I especially love their new It-Lash Mascara and their Lip Glow.

At $26 the mascara cost right around what most other non-drugstore brand mascaras cost. However, the Lip Glow is a little more pricey at $32. Not too bad, but I use it a ton, so it starts to add up.

Color Reveal Balm

I the other day I attended a Sephora event, and they almost always have a little gift that they give out at the end. This time it was a sample size of their new Color Reveal Balm. It’s only $13 and works just like the Lip Glow. I will say that I still prefer the Lip Glow, the Color Reveal Balm has a slight weird taste/smell to it, but I’ve been using the sample and am considering buying the full size.

When searching for the Color Reveal online I found a Color Adapt Gloss and since I prefer glosses, I plan to snag one of those for sure.

Henna Lipstick

Looking to go a tad more bold? The Man Repeller wrote about Henna Lips on her blog, the effect is similar, but with a little more punch.

Color adjusting lip products may not be your thing, but I like them for a soft, natural look. Don’t forget to share your lipstick looks on Instagram and hashtag #nationallipstickday.

Smooches, y’all!

Meet Your Match Kit

Meet Your Match Kit (open)

I majorly heart Sephora.

I majorly heart trying new products.

Each time Sephora comes out with a new collection or kit I can’t fight the feeling of needing to have it.

This was very much so the case with the Sephora Favorites Meet Your Match Kit.

There was nothing that I disliked about this kit, but I want to stress that these are minis. Samples. Not full-sized products. A lot of the reviews were from those that were disappointed with the size, so I was prepared to be a little disappointed. I wasn’t. In fact, I was very pleased with it.

A few notes:

The “purple” nail polish is really thick. I only painted one coat and was afraid that two coats wouldn’t dry without me managing to smudge them, and the color was bold enough to look as though I’d painted two coats.

The “coral” nail polish was a bit thin and even after two coats, I could still see through it, but I didn’t mind as it wasn’t too noticeable…

I am so glad that I purchased this kit! I really do like all the colors and can’t decide which color set I like the best.

Mani and a Magazine: Plus a Pedi

Today actually hit the 70s! In Vermont, that’s a BIG freakin’ deal! So of course sandals are a must and that means one thing: PEDICURE!

20140414-161246.jpg

Even though I’m super excited that the weather is nice, I have to be realistic. I know the temperatures will dip again, so I didn’t go too fancy with my feet, but my life needed a little perfection in it so, I went with Formula X for Sephora in Perfection.

20140414-142147.jpg

For my mani I wanted to embrace spring and love A Crewed Interest by Essie, it’s one of my absolute favorites and just really reminds me of spring.

20140414-142202.jpg

20140414-144337.jpg

Still haven’t gotten my first official pedi of the season but when I do, you’ll know! Anyone else rockin’ sandals yet?

Eyeliner

The two beauty products that I wear most regularly are mascara and eyeliner. I go through black eyeliner like it’s nobody else’s business!

I really like the Sephora Collection Define Yourself Black Eyeliner Set. It comes with five different types of eyeliners and the entire set is less than an eyeliner pencil from some other brands. Plus, it’s waterproof and, in my opinion, just works really well.20140325-195421.jpg

The set comes with :
1) A retractable eyeliner
2) A contour eye pencil
3) A jumbo 12 hour wear liner
4) A long-lasting 12 hour wear eye liner
5) A smoky cream liner (My personal favorite for wings!)

20140325-195444.jpg

20140325-195432.jpg

In high school I used to only wear eyeliner on my bottom lash line, but that is a huge NO-NO. I’d share pictures, but I’m pretty sure I’ve already burned them all. Now, I’ve learned that when I want my eyes to really POP, I can line them all the way around, instead of just my upper lash line.

20140325-195510.jpg

Whether you are a makeup pro or novice (clearly I am a novice), I highly recommend Bobbi Brown’s Makeup Manual!

Thoughts? Do you have any eyeliner tips? I would love to hear, please share!

One Perk of Being VIB Rouge

Being VIB (Very Important Beauty) Rouge status in the Sephora Beauty Insider program has it’s perks. Some of the reviews I’ve read online on various makeup forums and beauty blogs say that the only benefit is the free shipping. I disagree with this on so many levels, but I wanted to share how the free shipping is amazeballs! Not only can you buy one item, any item and get the standard three free samples, but you don’t have to spend $50 for free shipping.

Givenchy Le Rouge deluxe sample in 202 Rose Dressing, Marc Jacob Lash Lifter - Gel Definition Mascara deluxe sample, and Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 deluxe sample.
Givenchy Le Rouge deluxe sample in 202 Rose Dressing, Marc Jacob Lash Lifter – Gel Definition Mascara deluxe sample, and Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 deluxe sample.

Why is that such a big deal? I get emails that are exclusively for Beauty Insiders. This happens quite often as I also get emails for VIB only and occasionally for VIB Rouge only. I don’t always take advantage of these deals but one was for three free luxury deluxe samples with a purchase of $35. I was torn because I didn’t want to spend any money, but I had a few things I needed (OK, maybe just really wanted) so I got them and the deluxe samples without having to torment myself by debate between paying for shipping or spending another $15 just to qualify for free shipping. Again AMAZEBALLS!
